Year 5 Numeracy

Addition
Children continue to develop the addition skills taught in year 4 by partitioning four-digit and three-digit numbers into thousands, hundreds, tens and units and adding them together. Some children may be ready to progress to the formal column method for addition.

Subtraction
Children continue to develop their subtraction skills of finding the difference by counting on using blank number lines. Children find the difference of larger numbers by counting on using multiples of 100. Some children may be ready to progress to the formal column method for subtraction.

Multiplication
Children use the grid method to multiply a 3 digit number by a 2 digit number. They partition the  2 digit number into tens and units and the 3 digit number into hundreds, tens and units multiply them together.  Some children will be ready to progress to multiplying decimal numbers using the grid method to partition the numbers.

Division
Children use a number line to help them divide 3 digit numbers by counting up in multiple jumps of the number they are dividing by. Some children will be ready to progress to the 'chunking down' method where children subtract multiples of the divisiable number from the starting number.
