Enchanted Wood
Welcome to Year 2! Your class teacher this year is Mrs Whelpdale, along with our amazing class teaching assistant Miss Wainwright.

Our class name for this school year is ‘Enchanted Wood’. This story setting is inspired by the one of our year 2 recommended reads books called ‘Enchanted Wood’ by Enid Blyton. Both Miss Wainwright and I believe that books are the key to unlocking our imaginations and therefore we will explore a wide range of books over the next school term.

We will enjoy various texts to provide us with a purpose for writing in Literacy.

In Literacy, we will enjoy various texts to provide us with a purpose for writing supported by Literacy Tree. This will include ‘Toys in Space’, ‘The Minpins’, ‘Rosie Revere Engineer’ and non-fiction information based on ‘Florence Nightingale’ which coincides perfectly with our history topic all about the Victorian times. We will also share the stories ‘The Dragon Machine’ and ‘Houses held up by trees’ before finishing the year with a personal recount ‘all about ourselves’.

In Maths, we will be covering many topics over the term which include shapes and their properties, telling the time to 5 minute intervals, fractions of amounts and volume. We will continue to master addition and subtraction, which involve renaming, multiplication and division facts for the 3 times table and we will revisit our knowledge of number bonds to 20, double and halves of numbers up to 20, and consolidate all multiplications/division facts for the 2, 3, 5 and 10 times table.

In Guided Reading lessons, we will be focussing on reading skills through reading extracts and then retrieving information from what we have read. We will be using the skill of skimming and scanning to help us to do this as well as a continued focus on using our phonic knowledge to build upon our fluency skills.

We will cover a wide range of topic areas in our wider curriculum learning including, Science, PSHE, DT, ICT, RE, Geography, History and Art.

We will be exploring a range of materials in Science. We will sort them by their properties, identify why materials have been chosen to make various items, find out how paper is made and we will apply our learning with planning a picnic through carefully choosing objects.

In Geography, we will find out where our food comes from with a trip to a local farm, explore which foods are imported and why. We will also compare our lifestyle to that of Kampong Ayer.

In RE, we will introduce the children to Islam, building on the information they have been given in our assemblies. We will explore the question ‘Does going to a mosque give Muslims a sense of belonging?’

In ICT, we will look at our use of IT around us and we will also become photographers.

We will create our own pinch pots in Art using clay and we will design and create puppets for our DT project.
Y2 Enchanted Wood Information

We are fortunate enough to have Mr Sidebottom to teach our PE lessons which will now take place each Wednesday and Mrs Scully will visit our class every other Tuesday to teach Art.

Our library day is every Monday so please ensure you have your book in school each week. We are very passionate and enthusiastic about reading in year 2 so please remember to read as often as you can and bring your reading books back to school on a regular basis to be changed. Prizes are still up for grabs for children who are working their way through the reading miles as well as our in-class celebrations for readers who go above and beyond each week! Please remember to keep practising your spellings. Spelling tests will take place every Friday followed by a resit on the following Monday for children scoring 7 or less. This way our children have a second attempt to practise their spellings over the weekend to aim for a higher score. Our spellings each week will initially be based around the sounds we are covering in phonics that week.

We are so enthusiastic for learning in class and we can’t wait to share all our amazing work with you. Let’s work together both at home and in school to ensure that we have an amazing and successful year!
